If you are just starting your career or looking for the next rung up the ladder, you should find some answers to your burning questions below, which will help you make that first or next step.

How does recruitment process work?

The recruitment process typically involves some or all of these stages:

1 Application

Submit your CV and covering letter through the job portal or directly to the recruitment agency. Always tailor your CV to the role you are applying for and including a covering letter to summarise your experience and why you think you are right for the role.

2 Screening

The recruiter will review your application and ascertain if your skills and experience match the job requirements.

3 Initial Interview

This could be a phone or Teams/Zoom call when the recruiter will determine your suitability for the role.

4 Assessment

You may be asked to complete online tests relevant to the company or role.

5 Client Interview

If the recruiter thinks you are a good fit, you will be introduced to the company for interviews, either online or in person.

6 Offer

If the interview(s) are successful, you will receive a job offer which will detail salary, benefits and other details of employment.

7 Onboarding

After you have accepted the offer, the new company will take you through their onboarding process to get you ready for your new role.

How to prepare for an interview?

  • Research the company
  • Understand their mission, values, products and latest news
  • Review the Job Description
  • Identify the key skills and experiences required, prepare examples of how you meet these key qualifications.
  • Practice Common Questions
  • Practice answering common interview questions
  • Tell me about yourself
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What appealed to you about the role?
  • Prepare Questions
  • Have a few thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer about the role and the company.
  • Dress Appropriately
  • Choose attire that is suitable for the company culture and the position you are applying for.

What if I do not meet all the job requirements?

It is common to sometimes feel apprehensive about applying for a job if you don’t think you meet 100% of the requirements. If you can meet most of the criteria and have the confident in your ability develop your skillset or your existing skills are transferrable - it’s still worth applying. Within your cover letter explain how your transferable skills and experiences make you suitable for the role.

How do I know what career path is right for me?

Choosing the right career path can be challenging, but here are a few steps to help you choose

  • Self-Assessment
  • Evaluate your strengths, interests, values and personality. Carrying out a career assessment or speaking with a career coach can be insightful. Go back to your school days and consider which subjects you enjoyed and or excelled at.
  • Research
  • Find out about different industries, job roles and career prospects. Consider what types of roles align with your skills and which interest you.
  • Networking
  • Talk to professionals in various fields to gain background information and insight into different careers.
  • Experiment
  • If possible, gain experience through work-experience, internships, volunteer work, or short-term projects to see what you enjoy and excel at.

Should I work with a recruitment agency?

Working with a recruitment agency can be beneficial, especially if you are looking to enter a specific industry or need help finding job opportunities. Agencies often have exclusive access to roles that aren't advertised publicly, and recruiters can provide tailored advice and support throughout your job search.
